Commission during sick leave and parental leave
Calculate the commission a Danish salaried employee is owed for days of sick leave or parental leave. The calculator uses the average over a reference period and shows the total pay for the month.
How the calculator works
How commission during absence is calculated
For salaried employees on commission in Denmark, pay during absence must include the commission they would presumably have earned (funktionærloven § 9(3)). If that cannot be estimated case by case, an average over a reference period is common.
Example: DKK 216,000 in commission over the last 12 months is DKK 18,000 a month. Sick for 15 of 22 working days gives 18,000 × 15 / 22 = DKK 12,273. With a fixed salary of DKK 35,000 and DKK 5,000 earned on working days, the month’s pay is DKK 52,273.
During parental leave, commission follows the right to pay. With half pay under § 7 it is half the estimated commission. If a collective agreement or contract gives full pay, it is the full estimate.
Frequently asked questions
Do you get commission during sick leave in Denmark?
Yes, if you are a salaried employee (funktionær). Pay during sick leave must include the commission you would presumably have earned (§ 9(3) and § 5).
Which reference period should we use?
12 months evens out seasons and large single deals. 3 months is closer to the current level but swings more. Write the choice into the commission agreement.
Do you get commission during parental leave?
For the periods with a right to pay. Under § 7 that is half pay from the start of leave until 14 weeks after birth, and so half the estimated commission.
What about deals that close during the absence?
That commission is paid under the agreement. Whether it comes on top of the estimate or counts towards it should be in the agreement. The calculator shows both.
