Can you track commission in HubSpot?
Yes, up to a point. HubSpot has no built-in commission feature, but a calculation property on the deal can work out a flat commission per deal, and a report can total it by deal owner. Tiers across a period, accelerators, splits, clawbacks and a payroll-ready file need workarounds or a separate system.
This guide is for teams that calculate commission in a spreadsheet from a HubSpot export today and want to know how far they can get without leaving the CRM. First the building blocks HubSpot actually has, then a step-by-step flat-rate setup, and finally the places where the setup usually breaks.
What HubSpot offers today (October 2026)
We went through HubSpot's knowledge base and found no module that calculates, approves or pays commission. HubSpot's own page on commission tracking points to custom properties, calculated properties, workflows, reports and marketplace apps. These are building blocks, not a finished commission solution.
| Building block | What it does | Use for commission | Requirement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Deal properties (Amount, Close date, Deal owner, Deal stage) | Standard fields on every deal | The basis: amount, date, rep and status | All subscriptions |
| Calculation property (custom equation) | A formula on number and enumeration properties of the same object, with functions such as if, ifs, max, min, is_known and round_nearest | Commission per deal, e.g. Amount × rate | Professional or Enterprise |
| Rollup property | Sum, min, max, count or average across associated records | Totalling won deals on a per-rep record | Professional or Enterprise |
| Goals | Quotas per user, team or pipeline by week, month, quarter or year | Tracking quota attainment | Sales Hub Starter and up (Starter has the revenue goal only) |
| Deal splits | Splits credit for a deal between users, totalling 100% | Split commission | Sales Hub Enterprise |
| Reports and export | Custom reports and export to CSV, XLS or XLSX | Overview per rep and a file for payroll | Export needs export permissions |
The requirements come from HubSpot's knowledge base (see the sources at the end). Check your own subscription before you build anything, because the limit on the number of calculation properties also depends on it.
Step by step: flat-rate commission in HubSpot
The simplest plan, a flat commission rate on the deal amount, can be built directly in HubSpot:
- Define the basis. Write down which field commission is paid on (usually Amount excluding VAT), when a deal counts (Deal stage = Closed won) and which date decides the period (Close date). These are the three things reps most often dispute later.
- Create a field for the rate. If everyone has the same rate, put it straight into the formula. If rates differ by rep, create a number property on the deal, such as "Commission rate (%)", and fill it when the deal is created or with a workflow.
- Create a calculation property. In the deal property settings, create a new calculation property, choose custom equation and the output type Number. A formula could look like this: if(is_known(Amount), Amount * Commission rate / 100, 0). HubSpot does not run the calculation if a number property in the formula is empty, and the field is left blank. That is why is_known is there: it defaults empty values to 0.
- Limit it to won deals. Either let the formula check the deal stage (enumeration values must use the option's internal name) or let it calculate on every deal and filter in the report. The second is easier to maintain.
- Build the report. Create a deal report filtered on Deal stage = Closed won and Close date = last month. Group by Deal owner and show the sum of Commission. That is your monthly commission overview.
- Export and check. Export the deal list with the same filters to XLSX, check the numbers and move the amounts to payroll. Keep the file so you can show what was paid.
Example: three deals at 10%
Example: A rep closes three deals in October at a 10% rate.
| Deal | Amount | Commission (10%) |
|---|---|---|
| Deal A | DKK 120,000 | DKK 12,000 |
| Deal B | DKK 45,000 | DKK 4,500 |
| Deal C | DKK 80,000 | DKK 8,000 |
| Total | DKK 245,000 | DKK 24,500 |
So far, so good. The report shows DKK 24,500 and the amount can go to payroll. The trouble starts as soon as the plan looks a bit more like real life.
Where HubSpot commission tracking breaks
A calculation property can only see fields on the deal it sits on. Anything that depends on other deals, on time or on what has already been paid has to be built around it.
| Need | Why it is hard in HubSpot | Typical workaround |
|---|---|---|
| Tiered commission across a period | The rate depends on the rep's total sales in the month, not on a single deal | A record per rep with a rollup of won deals. Rollup conditions only support number and enumeration properties, so the period has to sit in a helper field |
| Accelerators above quota | Goals track attainment but calculate no payout | A spreadsheet next to the goals report |
| Split commission | Deal splits need Sales Hub Enterprise and split credit, not commission. Changing the deal owner removes the split | Manual shares in a spreadsheet |
| Clawbacks and corrections | The field simply recalculates when the deal changes. There is no record of what was already paid | Manual negative lines in next month's file |
| Draws | No balance carried from month to month | A separate sheet per rep |
| Approvals | No built-in approval of commission statements | Export, email and a signature |
| Payroll export | The export is a deal list, not a payroll file with employee number and pay code | Reformatting in Excel every month |
| Rep visibility | Reps can see fields on their deals, but not one statement with tiers, corrections and the amount paid | A PDF or spreadsheet sent by email |
| Audit trail | If you change the formula, the new formula may also hit deals that were already paid | Locked copies of each month's file |
Why tiers are the big wall
Example: The plan pays 5% up to DKK 300,000 a month and 10% on everything above. A rep closes DKK 200,000 on the 10th and DKK 250,000 on the 25th. The first deal earns DKK 10,000. The second has to be split: DKK 100,000 at 5% and DKK 150,000 at 10%, DKK 20,000 in total. The month's commission is DKK 30,000. Neither deal can work this out on its own, because the answer depends on the order and on the other deal. That is why tiered plans in HubSpot nearly always end up in a spreadsheet.
When a deal from an earlier month is then cancelled, you also need a clawback, calculated at the rate that applied at the time. This is where most setups start to cost more time than they save.
When should you move commission out of HubSpot?
HubSpot is good at storing the data and showing a flat commission per deal. Consider a dedicated tool when one or more of these apply:
- The plan has more than one component, such as tiers, quota, an accelerator or a bonus.
- Two or more reps share deals.
- You run clawbacks or corrections when customers churn or invoices are credited.
- Someone spends a day or more each month exporting, calculating and reformatting for payroll.
- Reps question the numbers because they cannot see how the amount was calculated.
Prowi reads deals, amounts, dates and deal owners from HubSpot through the Prowi HubSpot integration and calculates commission live according to your plan, including tiers, splits and clawbacks. Reps see their earnings in an app, and once the period is approved, one approved file goes to payroll. To see it on your own HubSpot data, book a demo.
FAQ
Does HubSpot have a native commission feature?
No, not as a separate module as of October 2026. HubSpot itself points to custom and calculated properties, workflows, reports and marketplace apps. You can calculate a simple commission per deal, but approvals, payouts and corrections have to be handled elsewhere.
How do you calculate commission in HubSpot?
Create a calculation property on the deal that multiplies Amount by the rate, and use is_known so empty amounts return 0. Then build a report of won deals in the period, grouped by deal owner, showing the sum of the commission field.
Can HubSpot handle tiered or quota-based commission?
Not directly on the deal, because the rate depends on the rep's total sales in the period. You can partly build it with a record per rep and rollup properties, but it needs helper fields and upkeep, and clawbacks across periods are not covered.
Which HubSpot subscription do you need for commission tracking?
Calculation and rollup properties require Professional or Enterprise, and deal splits are only in Sales Hub Enterprise. Goals are available from Sales Hub Starter, but Starter only has the revenue goal.
Can reps see their commission in HubSpot?
They can see the commission field on their own deals and a report if you share it. A single statement with tiers, corrections and what was actually paid is not available without a separate tool or a spreadsheet.
