Can you track commission in Dynamics 365?
Not in Dynamics 365 Sales. Microsoft documents no commission feature in the Sales app, but a won opportunity has actual revenue, a close date and an owner, and goals can track results per rep. Commission calculation exists on the ERP side: Supply Chain Management and Business Central can calculate commission on invoiced sales, not on opportunities.
This guide is for teams that run Dynamics 365 Sales as their CRM and calculate commission in Excel from an export of won opportunities. We cover what Microsoft actually documents on Microsoft Learn, how to build a flat rate with a calculated column, what the ERP modules can do, and where it usually breaks.
What Dynamics 365 Sales offers today (October 2026)
We went through Microsoft Learn and the Dynamics 365 Sales release plan for 2026 release wave 1 and found no feature in Sales that calculates, approves or pays commission. What exists is data on the opportunity and general tools in Dataverse.
| Building block | What it does | Use for commission |
|---|---|---|
| Opportunity | Est. revenue, Actual Revenue, Actual Close Date, Owner and Probability. Actual Revenue defaults to Est. revenue when the opportunity is won | The basis: amount, date and rep |
| Status | Open, Won or Lost. Won and lost opportunities are read-only until they are reactivated | Only won deals count, and the number is fixed after close |
| Opportunity products | Est. revenue can be calculated by the system from products and the price list, or entered by the user | Commission per product or product group |
| Sales team | Users and teams can be added so the opportunity appears in their "Opportunities I am a member of" view | Shows who was involved, but assigns no shares |
| Goals | Goal metrics in amount or count, actual and in-progress results, fiscal periods and parent and child goals, updated by a scheduled or manual rollup | Tracking attainment per rep or team |
| Calculated columns | Formulas with conditions on columns in the same table or a parent table through a lookup | Commission per opportunity |
| Rollup columns | SUM, COUNT, MIN, MAX and AVG over related rows, calculated asynchronously by system jobs | Totalling won revenue |
| Export to Excel | Export a view. The allowed size depends on the number of rows, columns and lookups | A file for checking and payroll |
Commission on the ERP side: Supply Chain Management and Business Central
Dynamics 365 covers both CRM and Microsoft's ERP systems. The ERP side does have commission features, but they work on invoiced sales orders, not on opportunities in the CRM.
- Supply Chain Management: Commission is set up with customer groups, item groups and sales groups, where several reps can share a commission. The basis can be revenue or contribution margin, and commission is calculated at the sales line level when the sales order is invoiced. For a return order, the commission transactions are credited when the return order is invoiced.
- Business Central: The Salesperson - Commission report lists posted sales documents per salesperson with sales amount, profit and adjusted profit, and calculates commission using the salesperson's commission percentage.
Both are a percentage on invoiced lines. We found no tiers across a period, quotas, accelerators or rep-facing commission statements in that documentation. And if you run Dynamics 365 Sales with a different accounting system, the ERP features are not in play at all.
Step by step: flat-rate commission in Dynamics 365 Sales
The simplest model, a flat commission rate on actual revenue, can be built with a calculated column:
- Define the basis. Use Actual Revenue as the amount, Actual Close Date for the period and Owner as the rep. Check Actual Revenue when the opportunity is closed, because it takes the Est. revenue value unless someone changes it.
- Create a rate column. If reps have different rates, create a decimal column on the opportunity, such as Commission rate. Keeping the rate on the opportunity itself means the formula only uses columns from the same table.
- Create a calculated column. In Power Apps, add a currency column with calculated behaviour. Set the condition to Status = Won and the action to Actual Revenue × Commission rate / 100.
- Build the view. Create a view of won opportunities with Actual Close Date last month and the columns Owner, Actual Revenue and Commission.
- Export and check. Export the view to Excel, total by owner, check the numbers and move them to payroll. Keep the file as documentation.
Example: three won opportunities at 7%
Example: A rep wins three opportunities in October at 7% of Actual Revenue.
| Opportunity | Actual Revenue | Commission (7%) |
|---|---|---|
| Opportunity A | DKK 90,000 | DKK 6,300 |
| Opportunity B | DKK 135,000 | DKK 9,450 |
| Opportunity C | DKK 60,000 | DKK 4,200 |
| Total | DKK 285,000 | DKK 19,950 |
The view shows DKK 19,950, and the amount can go to payroll. So far, so good. The problems start when the plan gets closer to real life.
Where Dynamics 365 commission tracking breaks
A calculated column can only see columns on the opportunity and its parent tables. Anything that depends on other opportunities, on time or on what has already been paid has to be built around it.
| Need | Why it is hard in Dynamics 365 Sales | Typical workaround |
|---|---|---|
| Tiered commission across a period | The rate depends on the rep's total revenue. A rollup column can total it, but it is calculated asynchronously and cannot split one opportunity across two tiers | A spreadsheet with a running total per rep |
| Accelerators above quota | Goals show actual and in-progress results but calculate no payout | A spreadsheet next to the goals |
| Split commission | An opportunity has one owner. The sales team gives access, not shares | Custom columns for the share and second rep, plus manual allocation |
| Clawbacks and corrections | A won opportunity has to be reactivated before it can be changed, and then the column recalculates. There is no record of commission paid | Manual negative lines in next month's file |
| Won versus invoiced | Actual Revenue is what the rep records, not necessarily what is invoiced in the ERP | Reconciling against invoices every month |
| Approval and payroll file | No approval of commission statements, and the export is a list of opportunities, not a payroll file with employee number and pay code | Email, a signature and reformatting in Excel |
| Rep visibility | Reps see the column on their opportunities, but no single statement with tiers, corrections and amount paid | A PDF or spreadsheet by email |
A quarterly tier the column cannot calculate
Example: The plan pays 6% up to DKK 400,000 a quarter and 10% on everything above. A rep wins DKK 250,000 in January and DKK 220,000 in February. January earns DKK 15,000. February has to be split: DKK 150,000 at 6% (DKK 9,000) and DKK 70,000 at 10% (DKK 7,000), DKK 16,000 in total. The quarter's commission so far is DKK 31,000. The calculated column on February's opportunity does not know that DKK 250,000 has already been sold, so it gives either 6% or 10% of the whole amount. Both are wrong.
If January's opportunity is later reactivated and lost, you need a clawback, and the tier moves for February too. That requires someone to see what was paid and when.
When to move commission out of Dynamics 365
Dynamics 365 Sales is strong at pipeline, forecasting and goals. Consider a dedicated tool when one or more of these apply:
- The plan has more than one component, such as tiers, quota, accelerators or a bonus.
- Two or more reps share opportunities.
- You run clawbacks when customers cancel or invoices are credited.
- Someone spends one or more days a month exporting, calculating and reformatting for payroll.
- Reps question the numbers because they cannot see how the amount was calculated.
Prowi reads opportunities from Dynamics 365 Sales through the Prowi Dynamics 365 integration and calculates commission live according to your plan, including tiers, splits and clawbacks. Reps see their earnings in an app, and once the period is approved, one approved file goes to payroll. To see it on your own data, book a demo.
FAQ
Does Dynamics 365 Sales have a commission feature?
No, not as of October 2026. Microsoft Learn describes opportunities, goals, calculated columns and rollup columns, but no feature in Sales that calculates, approves or pays commission. The commission features in Microsoft's portfolio sit on the ERP side.
How do you calculate commission in Dynamics 365?
Create a calculated column on the opportunity that multiplies Actual Revenue by the rate when the status is Won. Then build a view of won opportunities in the period and export it to Excel, where you total commission by owner.
Can Dynamics 365 goals calculate commission?
No. Goals measure actual and in-progress results in amount or count per rep, team or territory and roll up to parent goals. They calculate no payout, so accelerators and target bonuses have to be calculated elsewhere.
What about commission in Business Central or Supply Chain Management?
Supply Chain Management can calculate commission on revenue or contribution margin per sales line when the sales order is invoiced, and share it within sales groups. Business Central has the Salesperson - Commission report, which applies the salesperson's commission percentage to posted sales documents.
Can several reps share an opportunity in Dynamics 365 Sales?
Several users can be added to the sales team, but that gives them access to the opportunity, not a share of the revenue. Splitting commission has to be handled with custom columns or outside Dynamics 365 Sales.
